Lion Rock, at 495m, is located between Kowloon and Sha Tin. As named like a lion, it is also an emblem of the old living manners of people in Hong Kong in the past.

Start: Sha Tin Wai Railway Station

End: Minibus 53 from Tin Ma Court in Chuk Yuen to Lok Fu Station

At the hilltop, it goes along cliff edge in part of section and access to the Lion Head would require climbing.

At Sha Tin Pass, you could follow Sha Tin Pass Road down to Tsz Wan Shan.

Sha Tin Wai

It starts from Exit B of Sha Tin Wai Railway Station and passes through Pok Hong Estate at the oppsite side of Yat Tai Street. Follow the road beside Christ College, then take a short flight of steps up that joins Shui Chuen Au Street ahead. Follow it by beginning the slow ascent on the right, turn left at the next fork and then join the road with a gate on the right after a few steps. Head the road, it leads to the entrance of Ma On Shan Country Park. Trace along the sylvan trail uphill, it winds gently up and runs parallel to the stream along the valley. You could hear the streams gurgle there. Crossing the barbecue site and going up ahead, it joins to the concrete path (Wilson Trail) and comes to Sha Tin Pass on the left - A recess between Sha Tin and Tsz Wan Shan.

At Sha Tin Pass, you could follow Sha Tin Pass Road on the right down to Tsz Wan Shan.

Shatin Pass

At the Lion Pavilion, the open view over Kowloon Peninsula could be overlooked. In additions, there is a simple beverage store. From the junction, follow Sha Tin Pass Road on the right downward. After a few steps, take the path (MacLehost Trail section 5) to Lion Rock Country Park on the right at the corner by starting a flight of stone steps uphill. It is steeply up at the beginning then becomes gentle. Further up, you could look back to a grand view over the east of Kowloon and farther eastwards to Kowloon Peak. Neighbouring Lion Rock on the west, the trail swings along the hillside.

    Exit:
  1. On the way, there is a side path on the left that leads down to Shatin Pass Estate.
  2. At the junction of the branch to the hilltop of Lion Rock, you could follow the trail ahead to the pavilion of Kowloon Au if not climb Lion Rock.

Lion Rock

Not far ahead, take the long flight of uphill steps to the hilltop of Lion Rock on the left at the junction. The steps are steeply up and push to the crest where is the end of the back of the "lion". At the top, it offers the spendid views over Sha Tin and farther northwards to Pak Sin Leng as well as Kowloon Peninsula towards the south. In the sunset, its golden rays lights up the face of the lion and covers everywhere, turning them orange and light red. Afterward, follow the rugged trail on the right, it undulately contours the ridge towards the west and goes the cliff edge in part. Looking ahead at the railing, you could see the straight rocky cliff edge escarpment below the "lion head" as stretching down to Kowloon. Beside the warning notice, there is a short rocky path on the left that leads to top of "Lion head".

Access to the Lion Head would require climbing.

At the railing, take the path on the right downhill. It is rough and fairly steep at the beginning section, other is gentle. After descending to Maclehost Trail and going forward, it soon arrives at the pavilion of Kowloon Au. Along the downhill trail to Wang Tau Hom (Lok Fu) in front of the pavilion towards the south. It goes down to Lion Rock Peak. Afterward, follow the concrete road down, it then comes to Chuk Yuen Road.

Summary

At the hilltop of Lion Rock, the whole peninsula of Kowloon could be overlooked. Approaching the "Lion", could peer at its mystery in a short distance.
